Exclusivity

Black Friday used to be a single day event, now it's a week. Cyber Monday deals now start on Sunday. And don't even get me started on Disney+. Movies that have been in the vault for years are now available for $6.99 a month.

Exclusivity is the opposite of commercialism.

The lack of exclusivity comes at a cost. Sure, you may make more money in the short term when you have more days to sell, but exclusivity brings you much more than just short term cash.

I'm not sure about your circles, but in mine no one cared about Black Friday. I went to the mall at 11am and it was nearly empty. There were plenty of deals, but little interest because the same deals were available online a week earlier. The exclusivity was lost.

The buzz, interest and attention you get when you offer something exclusive does more for your business than the short term cash flow ever can. It makes you special. It makes you unique. It makes you interesting. Most of all, it gives you an opportunity to build a COMMUNITY around the exclusivity. Think of the die hard Black Friday shoppers of years past. The opportunity to connect has been removed.

And without community, we're all selling commodities.
